| Customer Reviews: Good Casual Gaming July 29, 2010 Scudder 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Echoes of the past is the good "hidden object" with interspersed puzzle game. I found it great for casual gaming as thats how I keep myself occupied on long flights. The hidden object portion is good with just the right amount of difficulty - other games (Curse of the Opera for one) have objects so small or so well hidden you cant find them and that is not the case here yet some of the objects are a challenge to find. The game play is fairly linear without too much running back and forth to get the items you need to progress in the game which I like. The mini puzzles were challenging but fun! Not too hard but definitely not too easy either. Echos was a bit short and ended much too quickly but was fun the whole way through. I would buy it again.
Good Casual Game July 9, 2010 I. Peters (Dallas, TX USA) 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
Just finished playing Echoes Of The Past: Royal House of Stone. This game is a mixture of finding hidden objects, collecting items for the inventory and eventually using these, as well as mini puzzle games. It wasn't too difficult but not too easy either. The puzzles range from memory-card style games and number games etc. to puzzles that can only be solved if one had paid attention to details in previously visited rooms.
I got stuck relatively early on with a number game where my thought process was too complex and I ended up at a total loss. Luckily my husband was able to help me out and from there it went smoothly and I finished the game without more assistance. However, when I got stuck at that point, I thought that the help/hint function was insufficient because it kept displaying only the initial hint. Repeated clicking (and I did plenty of that :-)) did not give me additional hints. This was the same at other points in the game when it got a bit difficult. As thought-out as Echoes Of The Past is, I wish the developers had put a bit more effort into the hint function.
On the other hand, I should mention that I am a rather impatient person and don't like to try for too, too long at any point in a game. I am much more of a casual gamer who plays during a break from work or in the evening and who likes to move forward fairly quickly. So for those who enjoy the going back and forth between rooms to find something that was overlooked earlier, and who like a bit of a puzzle challenge (like I said, these are not too complex to begin with) the limited hints might not be a problem at all. I had played another, similar game from Big Fish Games before (Mystery Case Files: Dire Grove [Game Download] and felt the same way about the hint function. My husband who likes to find the solutions on his own when playing a game did not think it was a problem at all. So there you have it: Different game-playing styles, different wish lists :-).
All in all I enjoyed Echoes Of The Past, just wish it had been a bit longer but considering the price of the download I am not complaining.
Not my favorite game and VERY short, but still fun July 28, 2010 Carter's Mom (Washington, DC) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a fun game to play mixing hidden object searches, mini puzzles, and the need to combine inventory items from several scenes to solve more complex puzzles. I enjoyed playing the game, but as the other reviewer mentioned, some of the puzzles did not provide enough instruction. Solving some of the puzzles was, therefore, a little more challenging that it needed to be. You were also forced to backtrack around the castle so many times to collect all the inventory items needed to solve each puzzle that it became a little tedious searching for another area with "glittering lights" indicating the need to find an object or solve a puzzle. I also felt that this was not the most logical game I have played, so I had to resort to internet hints at least four times to figure out what to do next. What I did like about the game was that the object searches were challenging -- no so much as to make it impossible, but I defy anyone to complete the hidden object portion of the game without resorting to the hint function at least once. The biggest deal breaker for me is that the entire game took me less than two hours to play. Believe me, by that time I was happy to see it end. Therefore, I can't recommend highly. I would, however, recommend Mystery Case Files, Dire Grove and Midnight Mysteries, the Salem Witch Trials.
Reviews Failed Me August 7, 2010 Tede I carefully screened the reviews for this game both those here and on other games where it was mentioned. I thought I'd picked well.
However, from the very first moment of play, you are strictly on your own. You also enter the same rooms over and over again. Sometimes, I was far ahead of the story-line book in that I would have already accomplished finding items, opening tombs, etc., and other pages were too sparse in the notes. I have now played about three/four of this story-line HOG, and by far this has been the worst experience.
I would suggest you use your resources in a more enjoyable manner, purchase a different game.
